Papers of Marshall Cousins, a prominent local historian in Eau Claire, including correspondence and notes concerning the early residents and history of Eau Claire; correspondence of his father, Henry Cousins (1848-1885) an East Troy attorney; correspondence connected with his position as president of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, 1928-1939; diaries, 1902-1907; records on Wisconsin banks and banking; and minutes, 1887-1896, of the Griffin Rifles Club of Eau Claire. Also includes records (1882-1946) of Grand Army of the Republic Eagle Post No. 52 of Eau Claire; biographical information on Eau Claire area residents; and general information on the Civil War, masonry, local government, steamboats on the Mississippi and Chippewa Rivers, the press in Wisconsin, and general state and local history.

The State Historical Society was founded in 1846, chartered in 1853, and became a trustee of the state in 1855. Chapter 75, Laws of 1967, continued the Society as an independent agency. The Society is charged by statute with the collection, preservation, and dissemination of historical and cultural resources relating to Wisconsin, the Midwest, and the nation.
